Defoliation
The process of falling or removing leaves from plants, which may be caused by folivorous insects, air or soil pollution, or by the use of chemicals (defoliants) by people, e.g. in forest nurseries in order to prompt the growth of deciduous seedlings.
Diameter at breast height
The thickness (diameter) of a tree measured at the level of an adult man’s chest, i.e. 130 cm above the ground (diameter at breast height DBH). The value is used to calculate the volume of standing trees.
Division (forest division)
Unit of forest division separated for administrative purposes (area of about 20 ha).
